Corporate Sponsor Highlight: The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum
Come Visit The Cowboy
A cowboy is so much more than a stereotype, and so is the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, the premier institution of Western history, art and culture in the U.S. You might have grown up calling it the Cowboy Hall of Fame, and that’s great. But it’s the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum now, although you can just call it The Cowboy.
The Cowboy preserves and interprets the evolving history and cultures of the American West and shares that story with millions from all over the world. It’s a history worth preserving, because the West continues to be a region and a history that permeates our national and global culture. The story of the West is the story of America itself – one of grit and determination, as diverse as its many landscapes.
Founded in Oklahoma City in 1955, the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum has had more than 10 million visitors seek out this unique institution to see some of its internationally renowned permanent collection of 28,000 Western and Native American art and historic artifacts. It has the world's most extensive collection of American rodeo photographs, barbed wire, saddlery and early rodeo trophies.
The Cowboy also features a superb collection of classic and contemporary Western art, including works by Frederic Remington and Charles Russell, as well as sculptor James Earle Fraser’s iconic The End of the Trail.
The Museum’s exhibition wing houses Prosperity Junction, a 14,000-square-foot, authentic turn-of-the-century Western prairie town, and interactive history galleries that focus on the American cowboy, rodeos, Native American culture, Victorian firearms, frontier military and Western performers.
The museum also is home to an outdoor children's exhibit titled Liichokoshkomo’, (pronounced Lee-cho-kosh-ko-MO), which is Chickasaw for “Let’s play!” It is a truly unique, 100,000-square-foot, interactive educational experience featuring waterfalls, Native American structures, a train depot, rodeo arena and a recreation of the Mesa Verde cliff dwellings.
The Cowboy also features a rotating schedule of fascinating temporary exhibitions and sponsors numerous educational programs to stimulate interest in the West’s enduring legacy.
So, whether you have an hour or a day, come immerse yourself in the myriad stories and experiences of the American West available at The Cowboy! For more information, visit nationalcowboymuseum.org.
