UConn Western Team Competes with University Bred Morgan's

December 20, 2022

In December 2022, AMHA sponsored the University of Connecticut Western IHSA team's competition in Storrs, CT. The University has a historical Morgan breeding program, dating back to 1947.  They breed a small number of horses per year, many of which stay at the university and participate in collegiate horse shows! Pictured are the Morgans that participated in the competition: UC Excalibur, UC Master Statesman, UC Nightstar, UC Emma, UC Celebration, UC Mi Amigo (not pictured)

The Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association (IHSA) is a test of horsemanship for collegiate level riders. The university competes with various other schools in their region, and the host school provides the horses to the riders.  The riders are randomly drawn a horse to compete, and often the riders are unfamiliar with the horse.  They then compete either a rail class or a jump courses or reining pattern with the unfamiliar horse with no warm up time. They are categorized into divisions based on their skill level, and are judged solely on their equitation and horsemanship. The mission of IHSA is "to provide equestrian competition for all college and university students regardless of riding level, gender, race, sexual  orientation or financial status. The IHSA is dedicated to promoting sportsmanship, horsemanship and academic excellence."

AMHA is proud to have provided a monetary donation as well as a silent auction item to the team.
