In Memory - Susan Irene Nerland

Mrs. Nerland, 71, died Monday, September 28, 2020. She was born on April 29, 1949, in Brookings, South Dakota, to Dr. Arthur E. and Irene M. Dracy. She grew up in South Dakota. On January 3, 1978, in San Antonio, Texas, she married Helmer Christian (Chris) Nerland. She was a riding instructor at the Walnut Hill Equestrian Centre in Rogersville for many years and garnered three Morgan World Championships in equitation with her students. Her banner year was 2019, when her home-bred show horse, “R’Surene Kantamos,” won regional championships and went on to place fifth in the nation at the Morgan Grand National in Oklahoma City. She obtained a Master’s Degree in English and, fluent in Spanish, she taught English and Spanish in the Sparta and Pleasant Hope schools for a number of years. She also operated businesses in South Dakota and a marina in eastern Tennessee with her son, Lance, until retirement four years ago. In 2019, she and Chris moved back to Seymour. Survivors include her husband, Chris, of the home; her son, Christian Lance Dracy-Nerland; her foster-daughter, Amber McGee-Rojas, and husband Edwin; and one granddaughter.

A celebration of life service for Susan Irene Nerland of Seymour will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of the Holman-Howe Funeral Home of Seymour. Online condolences may be left at www.holman-howe.com.
