In Memory - J. Kenneth Currier
Julian Kenneth Currier, 91, died Thursday, February 13, 2020 at Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin, VT. with family by his side.
Born January 11, 1929 in Newport, N.H. the son of Julian Currier and Florence (Cargill) Currier, Ken grew up in Lyndonville and Bellows Falls, VT and spent several years living with his family in logging camps on Mt. Tabor. He had fond memories of sledding down the road on a traverse to attend school.
After high school in Bellows Falls, VT, Ken entered the U.S. Navy where he was trained on sonar equipment in Key West, Florida. Ken later graduated from the University of Vermont in 1954 with a bachelor's degree in commerce and economics. Ken was married to Jane Marie Adams on August 29, 1953 in Bellows Falls, VT. The Curriers moved to Randolph in 1956 where they worked as teachers for most of their careers. Ken taught at Randolph Union High School for 35 years in various subjects including business and accounting. He also taught driver’s education after the regular school day and many Randolph residents can credit Ken for their winter driving skills. During his long teaching career he was also the yearbook advisor for 18 years and a basketball referee.
The Curriers moved from Randolph Village to their home in Randolph Center in 1969 where Ken resided until moving to Mayo residential care, Northfield, VT, in fall 2018. At Mayo he made many friends among the residents, staff, and local cribbage partners. Along with raising their six children, Ken and Jane maintained a small farm with all kinds of livestock, but were most dedicated to breeding Lippitt Morgans and Austrailian Shepherds.
Ken served his community on the Randolph town Zoning Board/Developmental Review Board for 21 years. His memberships included the Morgan Horse Assoc., the Lippitt Morgan Horse Assoc., the Australian Shepherd Club of America and the University Club. Ken was an avid reader and his hobbies included leather carving, hunting, fishing, bird watching, gardening, cribbage and dealing in firearms. He is survived by his children, Douglas Currier and wife Noemi, of Carlisle, PA; Sandra Malanchuk and husband Tom of Randolph Center, VT; David Currier and wife Joanne of York Beach, ME: Duncan Currier and wife Amy of Randolph Center, VT; Devan Currier and wife Judy of Fairbanks, AK; Susan Currier of Montpelier, VT; 13 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Jane Marie (Adams) Currier; and his 3 sisters, Judy Parker, Phyllis Anderson, and Janice Murchie.
Graveside funeral services will be held in the spring at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Randolph Ctr. There are no calling hours.
