Team Penning/Ranch Sorting

Team penning and ranch sorting are exciting and fast paced Western sports.

In team penning, a team of three riders race to separate three specific cattle from a herd of 30 and move them down to a pen. There is a time limit of 60–90 seconds, depending on the event and the team can’t have an incorrect numbered steer in the pen. The team with the fastest time and the most cattle in the pen wins.

This sport evolved from ranch work where cattle were separated for branding, doctoring, or transport and it’s a great sport for families to compete in together.

Ranch Sorting is a similar sport where two riders move a herd of ten cattle in numerical order from one round pen into a separate adjoining pen in sixty seconds or less. There is a twelve-foot opening between the two pens, and also two un-numbered ‘trash; cows that are mingled throughout the herd. In both penning and sorting, the numbers do matter – so any cow that crosses the line, either out of order or carrying the wrong number, will result in a ‘no time’ for the team.

Morgans excel at team penning because of their quick minds, strong hindquarters and great cow sense.  They are a family friendly horse that can turn on the speed for competition and then turn it off to be a pleasure riding horse.
